I pulled out the magnify glass an noticed the micro driving this board is a STMF103T8U6 (Arm cortex M3). I pulled the data sheet and found it supports CAN2.0. Is there a way to get the CAN rx/tx muxed to either the TX, RX/SDA or SCL pads IO? An external CAN transceiver could be added to connect to a bus. Keep the same serial format but have a formatted header ID for sending data and a separate for receiving.
In theory one could have several SMC G2 tied to the bus and all controlled over CAN.

Unfortunately, it looks like the CAN pins are used for USB, so adding a CAN interface to the G2 Simple Motor Controllers would require a non-trivial redesign that would cost at least several thousand dollars.
