Question about recommended shunt resistor value for current sensing – Motor #2361 75:1 Micro Metal Gearmotor HP 6V

Hello,

I am using your Pololu 75:1 Micro Metal Gearmotor HP 6V (product #2361) in a project, and I would like to measure the motor’s current consumption with a microcontroller (STM32).

Could you please advise me on a suitable shunt resistor value to use for accurate current sensing, considering the stall current is about 1.6 A at 6 V? I want to avoid excessive power loss while still being able to measure the current reliably.

Thank you in advance for your support.

Best regards.

Hello.

A reasonable shunt resistor value for this application is probably on the order of 0.1 ohms or less, depending on how much power consumption and voltage drop is acceptable to you and how much sensitivity you need. What is your overall goal that you are trying to achieve by measuring the current? Have you considered using a dedicated current sensor instead?

If you have not already decided on a method for driving the motor, you could also consider a motor driver or controller that offers current sensing functionality, such as our MP6550 or DRV8874 motor driver carriers.
