Over-voltage and torque performance on step motors

I plan to purchase 6 of the Pololu #2296 step motors. These have a “nameplate” rating of 5.4V/1A. I usually run stepper motors at least 4X the nameplate voltage, so I would run these motors on 24V, in the interest of better torque performance. I would use a driver with current-limiting to limit the motor current to 1A or less. I would much appreciate anyone’s comments or suggestions on this approach.

Thanks all!

Hello, Steve.

That approach sounds fine. If you do not have a specific driver in mind, all of our stepper motor drivers and Tic Stepper Motor Controllers have adjustable current limits, and most of them can handle a 24V input.
