Help with Hardware for Automatic Control Systems Experiments

Hello All. I am planning to get polished with Automatic Control Systems and I would like to start by creating a position and speed control for a DC Motor. I went through the theory/modelling in college about 9 years ago and I would like to bring these simulations to life.

The plan would be to start simple with experiments like this one and eventually do some inverter pendulum/balancing bot experiments so reusability of hardware will be important.

Are there any recommendations of what hardware to use? Motors/Drivers/Current sensors/encoders/etc?

I would 3D Print pieces to fix things in place and make the experiments public eventually. But need help from all of you first. Thanks in advance!

In order to pick a (gear)motor, driver and power supply, estimates are needed for the power, output shaft rotation speed range and motor torque required by the project. With those data in hand, the Pololu motor product pages make the selection easy.

Illustrations of the mechanisms you intend to make and basic information about the simulations would be helpful.
