Can you tell please, how to porgrammatically set the retention current of the driver DRV8825 or A4988 In order to prevent overheating?

The current limit on the DRV8825 and A4988 cannot be changed through programming, only through the potentiometer on the boards, the “Current limiting” section of the DRV8825 and A4988 product page explains how you can set those limits. If you need to control the current limit on the fly with a program, you might consider our AMIS-30543 Stepper Motor Driver Carrier which allows the current limit to be changed through an SPI interface.
