Beginner question about 499:1 Metal Gearmotor 25Dx58L mm LP 6V: defective?

Rookie question here: I just received my 499:1 Metal Gearmotor 25Dx58L mm LP 6V motor yesterday and when I hooked it up to 4xAA batteries, I saw no life. Am I just making some basic mistake, or is the motor defective? So far I’ve checked that the batteries have at least enough life to power a micro-metal 6v motor, and I tried both ways to ensure I didn’t just have the wires reversed. There was no load on the motor at the time.

TIA!

I would generally expect a fresh or fully charged 4x AA battery pack to be enough to drive that motor. Could you measure the voltage output of your batteries before you connect them to the motor, then take another measurement while they are connected to see how it compares? Also, could you post pictures of your setup that show all of your connections?
