Arduino CNC shield with pololu drivers and motors

Last week I ordered a Arduino CNC shield from protoneer. With this board it is possible to control 4 stepper motor drivers and their connected stepper motors.

The shield was designed to work with A4988 compatable polulu drivers, and I was told I could use the drivers from this link https://www.pololu.com/category/120/stepper-motor-drivers

When looking at this list of drivers, descided to go with the one someone told be to be the strongest, the DRV8825.

At the botom of this page there is a link to a stepper motor https://www.pololu.com/product/1200

Would this be a good combination for my 40x50x10cm CNC machine?

Hello.

That motor should work with that motor driver, but I do not how well they would work in your CNC machine. The DRV8825 is designed as a drop in replacement for the A4988 stepper motor driver, but there are some differences. You can read more about the differences in the “Key differences between the DRV8825 and A4988” section on the DRV8825 product page.

What is the strongest stepper I can put in combination with the strongest stepper driver?

In other words… What is the maximum kg/cm or oz/in or nm with a pololu driver and stepper motor?

Hello.

A good way to compare all the stepper motors and stepper motor drivers is to use the “Compare all products in this category” feature available near the top of the category pages. At this time, the most powerful stepper motor and stepper motor driver combination we carry is probably this NEMA 23 stepper motor with the DRV8825 stepper motor driver. We do have a stepper motor with more torque, but do not currently have a driver that would work with it.

By the way, when selecting a stepper motor for your application, I recommend you calculate the torque requirement and use that to select an appropriate motor. You might find this Force and Torque blog helpful for calculating the torque values.
