The Sharp Distance Sensors models with “A” in the name such as the GP2YA60 return an continuous analog signal that can be converted to an actual distance whereas IR proximity sensors or Sharp Distance Sensors with a “D” in the name (GP2YD8xx) return a discrete digital signal indicating whether or not an object is detected within the sensing range, not how far away it is.
