Uncontrollable twitching when using 8 servos

Hi all,

My robot has 8 servos, so I bought the Maestro 12-channel.

Of the 8 servos, 4 are smaller (Hitec HS-311) and 4 larger (DS3218). When only the small servos are involved, all works well, but when I get even a single larger one involved, all 8 servers start twitching uncontrollably.

I have a hunch that the power supply I am using, which I borrowed from my son’s RC excavator, is grossly inadequate, the label on it says 700mAh / 6V.

Just wanted to confirm with you knowledgeable folks that is what’s causing the problem. Thanks in advance.

Your guess is correct. A good rule of thumb is to budget 1 Ampere per servo, so if all 8 servos are moving at once, use a power supply capable of supplying 5-6 V at 8 A (40 to 50 Watts).

You might be able to get away with less current capability.
