The red LED during the execution script

Please i need help!!! I don’t know what else to do

During the execution of the program (script), the red LED randomly lights up (at different parts of the code), the program stops, and restarts from the beginning.

It’s important to note that when the board is connected to a PC along with a power supply, and I run the script from Polulu Maestro Controll Center, the script runs perfectly. However, as soon as I disconnect the USB cable from the PC and power the board only via power supply, the script starts behaving erratically.(the red LED randomly lights up (at different parts of the code), the program stops, and restarts from the beginning.)

I’m using a MAESTRO 12-channel controller with 5 motors connected. I’ve noticed that if I disconnect any 2 of the motors and run the script(only via power supply) , it works fine even without the USB connection to the PC. But once I connect the fourth motor or together with the fifth again, the issues reappear.

I initially thought the problem was with the motors, but even after replacing them with different ones, the issue still persists.

I have MG995 DIGI HI-SPEED motors.
Power supply: 6V6A model YU-0606

Could it be that the motors are not compatible with the board? or Power supply?
I bought another Maestro board, but the same issue occurs with it as well.

From your description it sounds like a power issue. The servos are likely drawing enough current from the supply to cause the voltage to dip below the Maestro’s 5V minimum operating voltage, and causing it to brown-out and reset. (When this happens when the USB is connected, instead of browning out, the Maestro switches to using USB for logic power until the VIN voltage recovers).

There are a few different solutions you could try:

  1. Reduce the current being drawn from the servos. Generally, servos will draw spikes of current when they rapidly switch directions or start up quickly from rest. To help smooth out the spike, you could try using an acceleration limit. You could also try using a speed limit if your application allows for it. You can configure acceleration and speeds limits for each channel in the “Channel Settings” tab of the Maestro Control Center. Alternatively, you can set them in your script using the ACCELERATION and SPEED commands. Lastly, if you can do something to reduce the mechanical load on the servos, that should help too.

  2. Use a separate power supply for the Maestro’s processor and the servos. As described in the “Powering the Maestro” section of the user’s guide, you can use two separate power supplies to decouple the Maestro’s logic side from the servo power.

  3. Use a more powerful power supply. A good rule of thumb to avoid power issues is to use a supply that can handle the combined stall current of your servos continuously. (I did a brief search and while I did not find a datasheet for those servos with a current specification, I did see some claims that they can draw upwards of 1.5A at stall).

  1. I traded to change ACCELERATION - 3 and SPEED - 20. Motors moves slowly , but I see the same problem. Can I do something’s else from Maestro control center!??

  2. In the user’s guide, for 12 channel board recommend to connect power supply to the dedicated servo power pins in the corner of the board and use the included blue shorting block to connect the pins labeled “VSRV=VIN”.
    I have blue shorting block in right place on the board like recommend .

But how can I connect Two power supplies to board with 12 channel? Because in user guide told about 6 channels only??

The Maestro’s operating voltage is 5-16V, so a 12V supply would be fine for the board, but most servos are intended for 4.8-6V nominal and will likely be damaged by a 12V supply.

To use two separate power supplies, you should remove the VSRV=VIN jumper, connect your servo power supply to the servo power rail, and connect your Maestro supply to the VIN and GND pins on the side of the board near the USB connector:

If you still see the same behavior when using two power supplies, please post a copy of your Maestro settings file as well as pictures of your setup that show all of your connections.You can save a copy of your settings file from the “File” drop-down menu of the Maestro Control Center software while the controller is connected.

In total 18v. that’s the right way to do it?

To clarify, if you are powering the Maestro and servos separately (i.e. you are not using the VSRV=VIN jumper), you should be using two separate power supplies (one for the Maestro and one for the servos). So, I am not sure why you are adding the voltages together, but a 12V supply for the Maestro and a 6V supply for the servos should be fine.

Could you post more details about your 10A supply? Also, could you try looking at the voltage at the Maestro’s VIN pin with an oscilloscope while the system runs and posting screen captures here to get a better idea of what is going on with it?

If you have the “Run script on startup” box enabled (which can be found in the in the “Script” tab of the Maestro Control Center), the Maestro will start running its script from the beginning as soon as its logic side is powered up. Could you clarify what you mean when you say “turning on the switch”? Is the switch just connecting the power for the servos while the Maestro logic power is already on? Could you post some pictures of your setup that show all of your connections?
