I am in need of a step-down voltage regulator with an input of up to 36vdc and output of 4.5vdc at 1 amp. Does Pololu make such a regulator or could a 5vdc output regulator be modified?

Hi, Bill.
The only regulator we have that would meet all of your requirements is the D24V60F5. It is probably over powered for your 1A application, but its output voltage can be adjusted to be lower than 5V. You can read more about that in the “Decreasing the output voltage” section near the bottom of the regulator’s product page.
