Proximity Sensor 2579

Can the proximity sensor 2579 be tuned to distinguish between a metal surface 8mm away and not the next closest metal surface 14mm away?

In this case, I’d need it to return a signal when it senses the disc in red, and not the blue surface 6mm behind it. In this way it will serve as a limit switch when the red disc terminates.

Thanks, Joel

Alternatively, can part of the surface be covered in an anti-reflective material that won’t trigger the sensor? Such as flocking tape.

Hello.

The 38 kHz IR proximity sensors provide detection ranges of approximately 30cm for the low-brightness version and 60 cm for the high brightness version. While they can be intentionally detuned to adjust the sensing range using the on-board potentiometer, that is probably not going to be an appropriate solution for your application where the targets are millimeters away from the sensor and each other.

Instead, this would probably be a good application for one of our QTR reflectance sensors since your application’s requirements are much closer to the optimal range for those (5mm for the QTR senors or 10mm for the QTRX sensors).
