Pololu - Magnetic Encoder Pair Kit for 20D mm Metal Gearmotors, 20 CPR, 2.7-18V

I have a motor (Faulhaber 2342CR) with 3mm shaft that needs an encoder. Has anyone ever successfully drilled out the magnetic encoder discs and mounted these little encoders to a larger motor?

Hello, Krustyberger13.

We have not tried drilling out the mounting hole on these encoder discs, but I would not expect any problems from doing so. You should probably drill it out to a slightly smaller size than you want so it can still press-fit onto the shaft without slipping.

By the way, if you are trying to use that encoder board on the Faulhaber motor, you might double check that the spacing of the motor terminals will work with the board. You can find a dimension diagram for the encoder boards under the “Resources” tab of the product page.

Just in case someone stumbles across this old thread: drilling out the magnets to a larger diameter to mount on a larger shaft isn’t very difficult. Just step up the drill bits one size at a time and slowly ream it out until it is big enough.
