What lubrication should be used on the gear set? It seems to me this is a very challenging situation - hi revs on the motor and lots of friction in the brass gears. Does this require synthetic lubricant or what?

In general, it shouldn’t be necessary to lubricate the gears. I believe I already emailed you about this question, but for the benefit of others who might be wondering the same thing, I’ll post my reply here:
We don’t have any specific recommendations, but any general-purpose lubricant (such as silicone-based bicycle lubrication) should work. I’d recommend against WD-40 as I’ve heard it can dry out and make things worse.
