Can the output be driven by 5V (5V is the regulator output), if the regulator is off?
with input open? Just with input open, or at any voltage below Vin max?

It sounds like you are talking about power being back-fed into the regulator through its output. Our regulators do not have any special protections against that sort of scenario, and we have not characterized them for us. If that is a concern in your system, you might consider adding some additional protection such as one of our ideal diode modules.
