The data sheet indicates that best results will be obtained if the emitter/receiver axis is parallel to an edge, which suggests better resolution with a particular orientation. Got it.
How might you characterize the distance to a plane inclined on both axis to the emitter/receiver axis? In other words, will the device respond with the closest point on the plane intersected by the emission’s (elliptical) pattern? Or the average…


It is not really clear what will happen under those circumstances, but these are not precision distance measuring devices so the exact details also are not likely to be that relevant.
