I’ve had several non pololu servos before now and as soon as the are given power they chirp slightly. Ensuring a signal is given prior to power does not prevent this from happening. Is this a feature of all servos or something that I can expect not to happen if I buy Pololu servos?

A small movement on power-up is not a “feature”, but it happens with most servos. Some might be better than others, but I have not seen any servos that specifically advertise that they do not do this. However, I am surprised that you still have a significant problem if the servos start receiving pulses immediately. What kind of power setup are you using, and how are you sending signals to the servos? How big is the “chirp” that you are worried about?
