Hello! I want to use the D24V50F5 to power a project of mine, where the power supply and the components are mounted in a box that will not have very good air circulation - so temperature is a concern for me. I am powering the voltage regulator with a 24V input, and my circuit is drawing 2.5A.
As part of the listed features for this voltage regulator, over-temperature shutoff is listed. At what temperature will this feature kick in? Is there a maximum operating temperature that is recommended for this device, and is this device capable of supplying the full output current of 5A at the maximum operating temperature? Thank you in advance!
Hello.
We have not characterized how ambient temperature affects the performance of our regulators in detail, but we would expect operating your regulator in an enclosed space will cause a reduction in some aspects of its performance like efficiency and the maximum output current. Exactly how much the performance will be reduced in your setup is hard to predict, so that is something you might consider trying to characterize. For reference, all of the specifications provided on the D24V50F5 product page are for operation in an open, room temperature environment.
Given your concerns about how the enclosure might negatively impact the regulator’s performance, you might consider the more powerful D42V55F5 regulator:
It is a newer design that should provide better efficiency and a higher safety margin, but the board is a little bigger (1.0″×1.0″ instead of 0.7″ ×0.8″).
