Cutting Spandex/Lycra/Elestan

Hi

Im trying to figure out if its safe to cut Spandex (Lycra or Elestan depending on where you are in the world)
Generally its a blend of polyester and polyurethane so it should be fine right?

Could any harmful polymers have been added, if so how can i know if its safe? The only info i get from the producers are that its elestan (brand name).

Hi.

While materials can be advertised as spandex, it is very possible that the material can be blended with other materials such as vinyl (which contains chlorine and should NOT be cut). You can check the safety data sheet from the material’s manufacturer for it’s chemical composition.

If this is something you are interested in having us cut, we will require that you provide the SDS before we cut your material.

If you are looking to cut this yourself (at a school campus or share/rental shop), once you’ve confirmed that it does not release any hazardous fumes you should start by doing small amounts of cutting first so you can determine whether or not the laser cutter you use is ventilating the fumes efficiently for larger jobs.
