I recommend getting started by reading about other peoples’ custom RC tank projects, which should give you some ideas on what kind of hardware to use and how to use it. For example, this RC tank uses one of our Maestro servo controllers to control gun recoil, conduct a predetermined sequence of gun movements in a couple axes, and also trigger a separate strobe light for a gun flash effect.
