There are many ways to measure distance, and with such a sparse description of your application, it is hard for anyone to recommend any particular solution over another. I noticed you also posted about this on RobotShop’s forum, and someone there has responded to you; you should follow up with them. In general, if you describe your application in greater detail, and talk about the kinds of constraints your system might have, it can be easier for people to offer suggestions. If you are not sure what questions to ask, I recommend reading this forum post about general advice for getting help.
