I would like to sense the position of a slowly spinning wheel (as in, one spin per day). Can one hall effect sensor be used to sense direction? Or would two be required?
You can probably get by with one if you have an analog sensor and the right magnet arrangement.

Jan and I talked about this a bit, and I wanted to warn you that to get by with a single sensor you will have to make a bunch of assumptions about your rotational speed, and there will always be some weird cases that it does not catch (like if it stops at exactly the right spot and reverses direction more slowly than usual). Building all of these assumptions into your code might be too difficult for it to be worthwhile.
