A4988 Sleep pin functionality

So I know you are not meant to unplug a stepper motor whilst the driver is powered. However I am wishing to swap between motors without killing the power to the machine.

Is it possible to send a low signal to the sleep pin which should turn off the fet outputs perform the change and then un-sleep or enable the driver. Would this be safe?

Or is there another solution?

Hello,

It should be safe if you use sleep or enable. Both will disable the output FETs. If you are swapping motors quickly, make sure you observe the timing specs in the datasheet.
