A4983 concern

Hello,

I’m having some issues with the driver that I have just recently purchased. I’m trying to get the 670mA current out of the driver and into the motor, but I haven’t connected the motor yet. I wanted to make sure that current going in is 670mA. However, when I try to see what the amperage is, I get 0mA. I tried adjusting the on board pot, but with no success.

Here on my connections:

VDD -----> 5V
GND -----> 0V

EN ------> floating (not connected to anything yet)
MS1------> floating (not connected to anything yet)
MS2 ------> floating (not connected to anything yet)
MS3 ------> floating (not connected to anything yet)
RST -------> floating (not connected to anything yet)
SLP------> floating (not connected to anything yet)
STEP -----> floating (not connected to anything yet)
DIR -------> floating (not connected to anything yet)

VMOT -----> 12V
GND -------> 0V
2B ---------> floating (not connected to anything yet)
2A ---------> floating (not connected to anything yet)
1A ---------> floating (not connected to anything yet)
1B ----------> floating (not connected to anything yet)

The microprocessor/CPU that I’m using is a 68K motorola just in case you wanted to know.

Why do you expect the board to draw current (beyond the few milliamps used by the electronics) with no stepper motor connected? Where do you think the current would be flowing? The product page for the A4983 carrier board gives you two possible ways of measuring the current limit:

The first method requires the stepper motor be connected (since current won’t flow without the driver outputs connected through the stepper coil). Nothing but power needs to be connected for the second method.
