37dx57l Stall current

Hi,

I have bought 131:1 Metal Gearmotor 37Dx57L mm with 64 CPR Encoder https://www.pololu.com/catalog/product/1447.
The specification show that its stall current is 5A.
I have project to make simple scara robot that can draw a square with 2 dc motor+encoder

Question:
when the stall current happened? Is it happen every it start moving?
Do i need h-bridge that can supply 5 amps or more per motor? what product would you recomended?

Thanks

Hello.

The stall current will be drawn in a few cases:

  1. If your motor goes from rest to full speed
  2. If you prevent the motor from turning while fully powered
  3. If you reverse directions really quickly (the motor could draw twice the stall current)

We generally recommend choosing a motor driver that has a continuous current rating greater than or equal to the stall current of your motor. We have a lot of motor drivers and controllers that can drive those motors, but a specific product recommendation depends on your application. However, the only controller we carry that can handle encoder input is the Roboclaw.
