Software speech for Orangutan

The Texas Instruments Speak & Spell from the 1970’s lives on! This was a pretty remarkable toy that generated quite passable speech, based on an extremely primitive 4-bit microprocessor.

Peter Knight wrote an AVR emulator for the Linear Predictive Coding algorithm used in the Speak & Spell and together with binary dumps of several different ROMs that used the TI speech processor, one can cobble together a pretty cool package for purely software-generated speech.

That link gives an audio example of the speech quality and has a link pointing to Peter’s GitHub deposition, which includes a great deal of interesting stuff, including experimental MATLAB code to roll your own speech libraries.

I would NOT recommend connecting a speaker to an output pin as the above clock example shows. I used a small audio amp instead.

I modified Peter’s Talkie code to run on the 20 MHz Orangutan LV-168 (after removing the C++ constructs and changing the output of timer2 to PB3). I also had to change one of the delay timing constants in the routine Say() to get the voice cadence to be reasonable. Below is the main routine for a talking demo, but you can download a self-contained package with all the mods at molbio.uoregon.edu/~remington/talkie.zip

This was developed using AVR Studio 4, so there may be issues with later versions of the IDE. Let me know if so! Note: my example takes up about 7K bytes of flash, so it is memory intensive.

I’ve made some minor changes to your project to get it working with Atmel Studio 6 and the Orangutan SV-328 (since we’ve discontinued the LV-168), and I noticed something interesting: since PB3 is a motor control pin, you can use the SV-328’s motor driver as an improvised audio amplifier by connecting a speaker across the M2 motor outputs!

For better results, you can set PD3 high to make the TB6612FNG motor driver hold M2B low and toggle the M2A output between high and low. (Otherwise, with PD3 low, M2A stays at high impedance and M2B toggles between high impedance and high.)

Increasing the input voltage to the SV-328 had a noticeable effect on the volume; it sounded quite a bit louder at 12 V than at 6 V.

What a great idea to use the motor driver as an amplifier!

It gets cooler: Peter Knight wrote MATLAB routines to generate LPC byte codes from .wav files, and included them in his distribution. He seems to have dropped the project, but he did encode part of Suzanne Vega’s vocal piece “Tom’s Diner”, and it sounds much better than the data from the old TI roms.

For your entertainment, I include part of that byte code to demonstrate the high quality below. Others have created (see e.g. furrtek.free.fr/index.php?a=spea … l&ss=1&i=2) non-MATLAB routines to convert arbitrary .wav files to LPC byte code. Your robot should speak with your voice! Or, use byte codes to send voice messages by email, challenging the NSA.

I didn’t like the “clock” library for formatting numbers, as it lacked “zero”, so here is another example that would be great for a talking weather station or other measurements. The voice is U.S male, very intelligible and the vocabulary is excerpted from a large library of aviation and weather phrases (“Vocab_US_Large” in the Talkie Library).

For this example, I wrote a simple routine to vocalize a formatted (ascii) number string. It sounds great!

Note that there are two different synthesizer chips (TMS5200 and TMS5220) with different coefficient sets and the speech roms are optimized for one or the other. Some experimentation will help determine which works best with which vocabulary set. See the comments on GitHub, Talkie Issues, for an explanation.

This particular routine takes up about 5K bytes of flash.

I’ve attached an Atmel Studio 6 project for Jim’s last demo (the “weather station”) converted to run on an Orangutan SV-328. We’ll be putting up a YouTube video and blog post demonstrating it soon. Hopefully, this will serve as a good template for anyone else wanting to experiment with the Talkie library (lots of additional examples and speech data can be found in Peter Knight’s Talkie repository on GitHub).

I didn’t have to make many changes, though I did have to add “const” to all of the speech data definitions so the compiler wouldn’t complain:

Also, I added some code to set up the motor driver pins for connecting a speaker on the motor outputs, and I made the LCD show what’s being spoken to make the video a little more interesting (so the project now depends on the Pololu AVR C/C++ Library).

I have a Baby O which needs to use both motor outputs.
I would also like to use the M2 motor output to drive a speaker using the Talkie Library as discussed in Pololu Forum “Software speech for Orangutan” to make announcements before and after motors have run.
I intend switching the M2 outputs from speaker to motor via a 5 VDC DPDT relay, I have diagram of this arrangement but can’t seem to add it to the post.
Can you please give advice on the following?
a) Is it feasible to configure M2 for both these tasks?
b) What if any changes would be needed to the talkie-SV-328.zip file to achieve this?

It should be possible to have the M2 outputs switch between these two tasks, but it might require some careful programming, since the timer/PWM module and interrupts need to be set up differently in each case. Both the Talkie library and the OrangutanMotors library have automatic initialization, where they initialize things the first time you call a function and then assume they stay set up correctly, so you would probably have to modify them to expose the init functions and allow you to trigger a re-initialization when switching between driving a motor and a speaker.

Could you try uploading your diagram again? It should be fine as long as it is under 5 MB in size.

Your schematic looks mostly fine, though you could probably get away with using a SPDT relay (connect one side of both the speaker and motor to one of the M2 outputs, and use the relay to switch the other output between the other side of the speaker and the motor). Also, you should probably connect the emitter pin of your transistor to ground instead of -9 V.

Re-initialising the OrangutanMotors and Talkie libraries after switching appears to be an un-tried and un-tested approach which I would prefer to avoid.
However I do have a PLAN B
Why not utilise Timer 1 (pin PB1 or PB2) as recommended in Pololu Support “Orangutan Buzzer: Beeps and Music” instead of timers 0 & 2?
I understand that this would not use the H-Bridge as an amplifier but I could replace the previously proposed relay with a simple Class D amplifier as highlighted in the attached diagram.
Please confirm that the Talkie Library can be driven via Timer 1 or advise if you know of an alternative / better solution.

The Talkie library appears to use both Timer2 (for PWM generation) and Timer1 (for modulation), so I’m not sure how practical it would be to rewrite it to use only Timer1; if it’s possible, it would take some significant modifications.

Our OrangutanBuzzer library only uses Timer1, but it is only capable of generating much simpler sounds like beeps and music made of sequences of single notes, not anything approximating speech.

If you haven’t already considered it, the easiest way to add complex sound to your application might be with a separate module, like this Adafruit board (although that would increase your part count and cost).

I have looked at the Adafruit WAV / OGG trigger board but would prefer to avoid adding additional cost, footprint and complexity, thanks for the suggestion though.
However I do have a PLAN C
As the motors are required to run sequentially and not simultaneously, they could both use channel 1 of the H-Bridge (pins M1A/B - timer 0) and be switched between sequences via a relay.
This would leave channel 2 available for audio amplification (timers 1 & 2 would not otherwise be used).
Attached is a diagram that shows the above proposal (comments welcome).
Can you please give advice on the following?
a) What if anything is required to stop the OrangutanMotors Library from initialising BOTH H-Bridge channels?
b) After above modifications (if necessary) to the OrangutanMotors Library, would the Talkie Library now be able to drive the 8 ohm speaker via channel 2 of the H-Bridge (pins M2A/B)?

I think your latest suggestion should work. To have the OrangutanMotors library not initialize the M2 outputs, you would need to edit the init2() function in OrangutanMotors.cpp and remove any uses of the Timer2 registers. For example, line 131 should be changed from
TCCR0A = TCCR2A = 0xF3;
to
TCCR0A = 0xF3;

Changing lines 131, 137, and 147 should be enough. (Note that some of the assignments at the top of init2() only apply to the Orangutan SVP, so you can leave those alone.)

Please let us know if you run into any trouble with the changes, and we’d be interested to see how it goes.

OK I shall run with PLAN C as this meets my specific requirements.
I shall keep you posted on the results (It may be some time).
I think my original proposal is the better solution as it offers full bidirectional, simultaneous control of both motor channels (as per the Baby O’s original concept) + an on-board stereo/mono audio amplifier + software Speech.
Surely this added functionality would make the Baby O far more attractive in the market place.
Perhaps somebody with the required skill set should try modifying the OrangutanMotors and Talkie libraries so they can re-initiate on subsequent calls?
